Cuba welcomed a landmark bill that legalizes the right for LGBTQIA2S+ people to officially change their gender identities without having a modified appearance or gender-affirming surgery. This bill comes on the heels of the 2022 Family Code which legalized same-sex marriage and adoption.
Much of the current legislation in Cuba is the result of years of activism from Cuba’s LGBTQIA2S+ community, including important work by the Centro Nacional de Educación Sexual (CENESEX), an organization founded in the late 1980s to train, educate, and advocate on issues of gender and sexuality in Cuba.
